What to know before you order
What the CNC router is for
The router removes material rather than marking it, so it is the tool for depth: raised letters that cast a shadow, a carved relief built up in layers, and shapes cut right out of the sheet. Our layered signs have been cut in Baltic birch plywood and MDF — the highland cow and the portrait bar sign in our work are both layered CNC relief.
It is also the tool for repeat work: components, panels, jigs, fixtures and other parts that need to come out the same every time.
CNC or laser?
For fine surface detail — small text, a logo, a name — the laser is usually the better fit. For depth, relief or raised lettering, the CNC is. Many signs use both: a routed backer board with laser-cut lettering on top. If you are not sure, describe the result and we will recommend the process when we quote.
Sending a drawing, or not having one
If you have a drawing, a DXF or STEP file is the most useful thing to send, with the finished dimensions and the material you have in mind. If you do not, a sketch or a photo with measurements is enough to start: drawing the part is part of the job.
Tell us about tight fits and critical edges up front, so we know which dimensions matter most.
What to send
Accepted formats: .dxf, .step, .stp, .pdf, .png, .jpg
- A DXF or STEP file if you have a drawing; otherwise a PDF, a sketch or a photo with measurements.
- The dimensions of the finished part and the quantity you need.
- The material — or what the part has to do, so we can suggest one.
- Any tight fits or critical edges.
When this may not be the right fit
- We cut wood and acrylic; we do not cut or machine metal.
- Fine engraved text or a detailed logo on a flat surface is usually a better job for the laser.
Common questions
What materials can you cut on the CNC?
Wood and acrylic, including sheet materials such as Baltic birch plywood and MDF. We do not cut metal.
Can you cut from my file?
Yes. Attach a DXF or STEP file to the quote form, or a PDF or photo with dimensions if that is what you have. With no file at all, we can draw the part.
Can you make the same part more than once?
Yes. Repeatable production is one of the main reasons to use the CNC: the same file cuts the same part each time.
Is CNC or laser better for my sign?
Raised letters and carved relief are CNC work; fine engraved text and logos are laser work. Many signs combine the two, and we will recommend one when we quote.
Do you do CNC work for Moncton?
Yes. The workshop is in Dieppe, a few minutes from Moncton, and serves Greater Moncton. Pickup is by appointment, or we ship and quote the cost with the job.
